Winter Solstice is the first day of winter and longest [OOPS!] I mean shortest day of the year. Sun., Dec. 21, 12:47 PM EST (17:47 UT), marks the solstice this year (2009), the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere.This is a photo of the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge (Which is located under a great big red star on a map of southern England).
